(1) NBS (N-bromosuccinimide) is primarily used for selective bromination at allylic and benzylic position. The alkene is heated in a nonpolar solvent usually carbon tetrachloride and in the presence of peroxide benzoyl peroxide.

(2) NBS can also be used to oxidise primary alcohol into aldehyde and secondary alcohol into ketone.
